Welsh scientist Christian Dunn has earned the nickname “The Bogfather” for a lifelong fascination with peatlands that began in childhood. Today, that early curiosity has evolved into a professional mission: leading efforts to restore degraded peat bogs across the UK. As a university researcher and advocate, Dunn is part of a growing scientific consensus that repairing these unique wetlands is one of the most effective natural strategies available for mitigating climate change.
Peatlands are waterlogged ecosystems where dead plant material — primarily sphagnum moss — accumulates over millennia without fully decomposing. Because the water excludes oxygen, the carbon absorbed by those plants during photosynthesis remains locked in the soil rather than returning to the atmosphere. Although peatlands cover only about 3% of the Earth’s land surface, they store an estimated 550 gigatonnes of carbon globally. That is roughly twice the amount held in all the world’s forests combined, making them the planet’s most efficient terrestrial carbon sink.
In the UK, centuries of drainage for agriculture, forestry plantations, and peat extraction for horticulture have left an estimated 80% of peatlands in a degraded state. When drained, the exposed peat oxidizes, releasing stored carbon as carbon dioxide. The UK’s damaged peatlands currently emit roughly 10 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent annually — comparable to the emissions of several million cars. Restoration typically involves blocking drainage ditches, removing invasive trees, and reintroducing native mosses to raise the water table. Once re-wetted, the bog stops emitting carbon and can eventually resume sequestering it.
The benefits extend well beyond climate metrics. Healthy peatlands act as natural sponges, absorbing heavy rainfall and reducing downstream flood risk for communities. They filter water, lowering treatment costs for drinking supplies, and provide critical habitat for specialized wildlife, including birds like the curlew and plants like the carnivorous sundew. Economically, restoration creates rural jobs in land management and ecotourism. The UK government has recognized this value, setting targets to restore 35,000 hectares of peatland in England by 2025, with similar commitments in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
Despite the clear science, progress remains slow. Restoration is labor-intensive and expensive, often costing between £1,000 and £3,000 per hectare. Funding gaps persist, and coordination across private landowners, conservation groups, and government agencies is complex. There is also a cultural hurdle: for generations, “improving” land meant draining it. Shifting that mindset requires education — work Dunn embraces through public talks, media appearances, and school outreach. His moniker, “The Bogfather,” serves as an accessible entry point for conversations that might otherwise feel technical or abstract.
Peatland restoration is a rare example of a climate solution that delivers immediate, local co-benefits alongside global impact. Even if you don’t, the carbon held in those soils helps stabilize the climate system everyone depends on. Consumers can support the effort by choosing peat-free compost for gardening — a simple switch that reduces demand for extraction. Policymakers, meanwhile, face pressure to close loopholes that allow continued drainage and to scale up public funding. The science is settled; the question now is whether society will invest at the scale the crisis demands.
