The abstract nature of “environmental targets” masks very concrete consequences for households and communities. When targets for water quality are missed, it translates directly into sewage spills in local rivers and bathing spots, affecting recreation and public health. Failure to meet air quality standards means continued exposure to harmful pollutants like nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter, which exacerbate asthma and cardiovascular disease, particularly in urban areas.<\/p>\n
Economically, the degradation of natural capital\u2014such as soil health and pollinator populations\u2014poses long-term risks to food security and agricultural resilience. The OEP has previously warned that the cost of inaction significantly outweighs the cost of investment. For the taxpayer, missed legal targets also open the government up to judicial review, potentially forcing expensive, last-minute policy corrections ordered by courts rather than planned by ministers.<\/p>\n
